Dentist

Alex went to the dentist for the first time yesterday. It was really hard for me to "talk it up like you are going to the zoo" like they say to do. I hate the dentist. But I did my best and I actually think he thought it sounded cool. I really should have read him a book about it or something.

Well, after playing with the video games in the waiting room he really did believe me that the dentist was fun! He looked at me and said in a very cheery way- "Den-tist!" with a big smile!

They put us in a room with no dentist chair- just a beanbag and a tv where they turned on Cars. Alex is sooo digging "the dentist". Then we meet the dentist. She is nice. Alex let her look quickly at her teeth and was super annoyed that she was in the way of the tv. "No mouth! Cars!" So after the nice ways were not working, we ended up having to hold him down, tears, kicking and screaming, prying his mouth open....you get the picture. All she wanted to do was look. I wasn't surprised he refused to cooperate. This is how he is with all "medical professionals" now. He is not falling for "just want to look" even though it's the truth! And he doesn't really let me brush his teeth (we count on a good brushing by Dad every night). As soon as we let him go and asked if he wanted a balloon- the drama stopped and he perked right up. Lil stinker. I am a little surprised that they didn't have a better plan than that. I could have told you that he wouldn't want to stop watching the video and that he wasn't going to like being forced to open his mouth.

Good news is that his teeth look good. The dentist was pleased. Gold star for Dadda's brushing! I also laugh at the thought of flossing his teeth which she recommended. Yes, in theory, that would be a great idea. Anyone out there doing so, you just let me know how you do that!

Alex talked about the dentist the rest of the day. He thinks he did pretty well....I wish I had it on camera to remind him. Yet, all I have is this...I guess a positive memory of the dentist is better.

she is in RR by the hospital so it probably wont work for you but I liked her and the office. Dr. Bookmeyer
yeah, I only went cause my pediatrician said too. but the dentist was making me feel silly for coming in. it wasn't really worth it in my opinion. wait till you know she will somewhat cooperate.

Yes...flossing a two year old is the biggest joke EVER. Your appointment is similar to ours...I think that is just how it goes until they get older. Glad his teeth are healthy!

I love Rising Stars Pediatrics! Best experience EVER! We went to a different place and the kids did not like it. But they LOVE Rising Stars! Dr. Singletary is AWESOME!

Well Evey is 3 and we just went last week as well. She didn't kick and scream but she cry a little and was very nervous about the whole thing. She did let them look at her teeth but that was it. We will try brushing next time. My uncle was my dentist so I never minded going and was never a big deal...I did not prep her enough. She did the same thing...told James all about the dentist and acted like she did such a great job. So funny. I love these moments!

Your story sounds like our typical visit to the dentist. I am glad I am not alone in the flossing department. We have never attempted it and will just wait for the dentist to do it at the next visit.

OK, the funny part is the dentist looks like she is holding his arm behind his back to keep in in place. I'm laughing! You know, they should put the TV in the ceiling. What kid wouldn't lay back and watch TV, even in a "dentist" chair.

Still not flossing Zachary's teeth, and he is 9. I do have those single use flossers that hold the floss. He will occassionally try to use it. Trash the string. How do you honsetly expect to get all your fingers and string in your child's mouth. Ridiculous!
